It's common sense they didn't leave with force since we were divided and few in numbers but when Gandhi united us they had to leave not because he was a powerful leader or anything but they were outnumbered and would suffer heavy loses if we would resort to violence. Think about it they didn't leave with force then why the hell would they leave without force?
