The best minds at our nation's birth knew that if we were to hold our claim to the lands west of the Appalachian mountain chain, it was critical that we find a way to move heavy cargoes between east and west. George Washington tried to canalize the Potomac River between the Revolution and being sworn in as our first president - but in vain. That feat would finally be accomplished far the the north, across the flat wilderness that was Central and Western New York State.
