  • recommend to use vacuum cleaner ???

  • No, bad idea, the suction is too strong and it can suck the contacts out.

  • Can i use the nikon brush pen instead of the nylon brush?

  • Sure but do not use on lenses' front and rear glass elements.

  • I'm new to photography and just purchased a canon 7d..I seem to be having this problem..but it just doesn't make sense to me that "microbial dirt" could cause a problem with the electrical connecton..It's not like there's any corrosion on the terminals, so why would this be the fix for the problem? Not trying to be sarcastic, just really don't get it...Are these terminals really THAT sensative?

  • We have no technical knowledge in camera design but we can safely say that those contacts are pretty sensitive. They need to be squeaky clean in order to get clear communications between camera and lens. So, yes, this is how you clean the contacts on AF film / digital cameras and lenses.

  • I thought my lens was broken, communication err, but all it needed was to clean its contacts.

I tried cleaning the contacts a few times before, a timid quick wipe with a lens cloth, it's delicate after all. But today in frustration, the day before I was sending the lens away for repair (110 euros) I scrubbed the contacts as if I was scrubbing varnish from wood, I was shocked. The lens is working again!

I probably should have watched this vid first.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 I have actually gone to a store recently and tried out a Canon 55-250mm with my camera body and the short time that I was in there, I did all I could in an attempt to get my camera to read that error and it simply wouldn't recreate. I only got the Tamron as a temporary lens to save money to begin with so it's going back and I'm getting a Canon 18-200mm with image stabilization. Thanks for the pointers.

  • Try cleaning lens' and camera's contacts both. We already have a tutorial on how to clean the camera's contacts and not to worry, Nikon's contacts cleaning technique will work on any other AF camera bodies. If you are still experiencing a problem after cleaning, try taking pictures with a different lens and see if the problem still presents. If no problem then you will know there is a problem with the lens, send the lens in for service to have it looked at.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Well, I use a Tamron lens on my Canon 50D and I've been getting a "Lens communications error" after every few pictures lately and it says to clean the lens contacts. I don't know if it just means the ones on the lens or both those and the ones on the camera.
