From 1817 to 1821 The French-born Pirate, Jean Laffitte and his crew of privateers and mercinaries raided shipping from what would later be known as, Galveston, Texas. Tales of his buried treasure in the Houston - Galveston area have intrigued treasure hunters and historians for years. No one knows for sure what happened to LaFitte or if his vast pirate booty was ever recoverd.

Jean Laffitte helped defeat the Spanish in New Orleans in 1812. It seems the pratice of hiring mercinaries is nothing new for the U.S.A.
