3 years later and every time I close my eyelids I see my dead mother on the floor.

3 years later and I still have nightmares every single night, replaying those two days over and over.

3 years later and every time I walk by her empty bedroom, I cringe.

3 years later and I'm still living with my horrible father, who's never home.

3 years later and I'm moving to the other side of the country.

The other day, the child protection agency came to our door. The same day my dad had happened to actually be home. Apparently someone had reported him. They told my dad if he couldnt clean up his act, they would take me away and possibly send him to jail.

So we did what people like my dad do best; we ran.

After a few slaps on my face and sides, and my dad yelling at me, blaming me for them showing up at our door, we packed a small suitcase filled with only the essentials, hopped on a plane, and soon landed in sunny California.

We had lived in a discreet house, away from everyone, in North Carolina. I had never left North Carolina; first time out of state. I sure was taking a big step away...

As soon as we got there we went looking for a cheap hotel to stay in until we found an apartment.

Not long after we got there, dad left. Probably to go looking for a bar.

On the plane ride here, I looked up schools in the area my dad had told me we would be staying in.

The school year had already begun and classes were in full swing.

Yay. I get to be the new girl who randomly starts popping into classes in the middle of the school year.

I had never gone to public school. At one point, I went to preschool, and was going to start kindergarten, but my parents decided to hire a tutor to come to our house and teach me.

That lasted until the week before 6th grade started.

I had gone through way too many different tutors to count. They all kept giving up on me. Saying I didnt listen, or I couldn't comprehend things the way I should have for my age level.

I didn't struggle in school though; I just didn't try.

After that, mom stopped trying to find me a tutor, and just had me homeschooled using a program on my computer.

I would've much rather just continued homeschooling here, but dad said that might raise suspicion...? I didn't really get where he was going with that, but I knew better than to argue with him.

I pulled my laptop out of my bag and sat down on the bed I was claiming as mine.

After 30 minutes of searching, I found a nice, cheap apartment that was close to the school that had stood out to me the most.

I dialed my dads number on my cell phone and prayed that he wasnt drunk yet.

"What?" Thank God. He wasnt drunk.

"I found a place. Its cheap, nicely sized, and close to a school, so I can just walk." I said, hoping this conversation would'nt take a turn for the worst.

"We'll buy it tomorrow morning. I have to go. Goodbye Liz." He said, abruptly hanging up.

Uhhh.... what exactly just happened?
