Photo-real water simulation, created by Fusion CI Studios for architectural visualization studio, F10 in the UK (www.f10studios.co.uk ). F10 modeled, lit, rendered and comp'd.
The fluid simulations for the fountain were physically simple, since the water simply had to react to gravity and interact with the shape of the fountain's parts -- it's basins, nozzles, etc. The challenge in this case was dealing with the surprisingly large scale. The camera in the project flies around the fountain and at times gets in quite close, so the water had to be high res fluid for the entire sim. In addition the fountain itself is a giant, around 8 metres high, making the basins essentially small lakes. To add to the mix, the fountain has an incredibly detailed shape, more like a crystal chandelier than typical smooth stone fountains. To achieve the scale, we not only had to get the motion of the fluid right, but there had to be the right level of detail to make it look like a giant fountain, which translates to higher fluid resolution. All this adds up to insanely long sim times unless you break it up into pieces.
Each basin of the fountain was simmed separately: top, middle, bottom basin and base. The upper sim results were brought into the lower sims thru binary loaders to get realistic interaction of the downward streaming water with the lower water surface. False bottoms were added to each basin to reduce the volume of water needed to sim, and the large base pond was simmed as a Realwave surface. Small, low poly "blocking objects" were distributed around the lip of each basin thru a simple batch script, and given gentle random noisy motion in order to get the water overflowing the lip to move with more realistic converging and pulsing stream motions typical of real fountains.
What's that music? :D

I like the fountain. Its like my fountain but mine is not even close to being as fancy. I have a video of it if you are interested.
