I developed this method along my many years of ED experience, from both ends of the spectrum -- from full-on BED to hardcore restriction with AN, and now, to a balanced approach! This Method has helped many Members of the Project Shapeshift Community, and after numerous requests, I am finally sharing it here on YouTube! My Slow/Savor/Stop Method is a powerful approach to the Mindful Eating praxis and may help you, no matter where along the ED spectrum you currently reside.
In this video, I present the method in the context of binge mitigation. I will make others to address how this can also help when the challenge is eating MORE, as with restrictive ED's. It helps with that too!
Briefly, here's how the method helps with specific ED's:
AN: ALLOWING ESSENTIAL NOURISHMENT and eating in a safe manner; preventing excess intake and resulting guilt.
BN: If you don't binge, the impetus to purge is much less intense!
COE/BED: If you learn to feel SATED rather than stuffed sick, the ensuing guilt/shame goes away!
Iwould love feedback on this, and I hope someone finds it useful! :)
Principles of Implementing the Slow/Savor/Stop Method discussed:
Eating disorders are so potently insidious. The longer one Lives with an ED, the more the pathology progresses to invade every area of our sense of self; our Lives. This is one of the greatest reasons that ED's are so hard to treat. In chronic, long-standing ED's, separating pathology from aspects of our being which are intrinsically part of ourselves is nearly impossible, and current treatment modalities instruct us to obliterate EVERY FACET of our ED. Of course many sufferers will relapse in despair! Rather than STOPPING all thoughts/behaviors regarding eating, REPLACING these with POSITIVE thoughts/behaviors makes the transition to Healing so much more realistic!
My approach suggests a conversion from toxic to Healing thoughts and behaviors: A transition rather than total renunciation of our abberrent approach to Life.
Examples:
Get in touch with your body cues: hunger, appetite, satiety, fullness, etc.!
Make eating a SACRED act rather than a profane act!
Meditate on POSITIVE thoughts rather than negative (Examples/affirmations provided)!
Ritualizing: Make HEALTHY POSITIVE rituals in place of toxic ones!
Be awake, alert and oriented x3! -- borrowed from medical assessment, this is a great before-eating preparatory exercise!
I plan to make a more concise video in the future and also explain how the Slow/Savor/Stop Method can help in the context of individual ED's.
Questions are welcomed and encouraged! :)
