For me, the best part of the series by far was when Ikari found the strength to brake free of the phony world.

The cheif overcomes doubts, lies and avoiding reality all in one scene... EPIC!

The scene is about love, in my opinion. Ikari made a promise to Misae to be there for her through her disappointments and failures, told her that she was worth something even if there wasn't a place for her in society; there was a place for her beside his side. When he lost his very sense of identity, she brought him back saying the exact same thing. She loved him for who he was just as he loved her for who she was, even if they didn't have a place in society.
