"My kingdom for some Phalanx guns!" would have been a funny line for Ulysses to say here. I thought it was strange that a vessel which had been designed to face hostile attacks would not have any defensive weaponry.

@DonKain That's because the Odyssey was a scientific research spaceship, not a warship. This fact shows one of the ways the french managed to write the script of this series without a violent or warrior theme but also without dumbing it.
After all, in the first episode, Ulysses was just going on a research journey, not on a military course. It reminds me of the Star Trek theme, only without the Klingon/Romulan/and whatnot confrontations.
