In the Renaissance, people encountered so many new ideas in the writings of the ancient Greeks and Romans (made available for the first time via the printing press), that they found it difficult to contain their exuberance. Learning to write reflectively — by holding a mirror up to what you're reading, and seeing your human self in the work, and writing about your reactions — is a great way to build your empathy with people and events in the past.
