The fist salute is the Communist salute. It is practiced by many groups to show support for communism, and has been around for over a hundred years since the first internationale.

The commercial just seems very maudlin and overdone. We almost say "sicky sweet". I guess we in the West are not used to such bald propaganda anymore.
