Dr. William Booker, DC of Capital Rehab of Arlington (http://www.CapitolRehabofArlington.com) demonstrates a 3-phase exercise designed to facilitate firing of the gluteus maximus and gluteus medius. These exercises are called Bridges on the heels, Single leg Bridges on the heels, and Bridges with a kick. The goal of this exercise track is to improve conditioning and firing of the gluteus maximus and medius, allowing better support of the lower back. • Why does lifting the toes favor activation of glutes over hamstrings?

  • @rggnstthmchn With specific regards to the hamstrings, you are going to get some hamstring activation, but you shift the primary force from the hamstrings to the glutes, the more you bend the clients knees. But more importantly, when you lift the toes and push through the heels into the floor, you activate the POSTERIOR chain from the calves, through the hamstrings and the glutes. Most people with dysfunction are QUAD DOMINANT, so the goal is to activate the posterior over the anterior chain.

  • @drbillbooker I'm curious what mechanism favors activation of the glutes in this position (toes lifted); is it a neural mechanism? Also, is there any EMG (or other) data to show a significant difference between toes lifted and toes not lifted? I don't mean to be rude, I'm just skeptical of the magnitude of the benefit of lifting the toes.

  • @rggnstthmchn I am trying to send my reply, but it keeps showing an error message. I'll keep trying.
