When lit on fire, the mixture in the beaker undergoes rapid heating and shoots off sparks. Why? This it he thermite reaction: Fe2O3 + 2 Al --» Al2O3 + 2 Fe + heat. The reaction is so exothermic that it reaches temperatures upwards of 2200 degrees C. This is clearly hot enough to vaporize the copper on the penny, fuse the ceramic to the gravel, and almost instantaneously light the dry leaf on fire.
