Florida - Atlas ICBM launched at Cape Canaveral, tape recorder running, carried payload of research instruments 9000 miles to Indian Ocean, "longest surface-to-surface rocket ever achieved."
Not exactly, the first missile with nuclear warhead was the PGM-11 Redstone designed by Wernher von Braun. Atlas just entered service a few months before Redstone.
@Celeon999A Thanks for the correction! :)

This was the 1st of two Atlases flown 9,000 miles in 1960 -
well beyond the designed range of 5500 miles. Atlases do
not explode on re-entry.

I am posting a video response of the Atlas missile actually EXPLODING on lift-off.

Sweet! Did you see any explosions of the Atlas hitting targets?

Great video. Brings back memories. I used to watch Atlas launches back in the late 60s at Vandenburg AFB.
