Florida - Atlas ICBM launched at Cape Canaveral, tape recorder running, carried payload of research instruments 9000 miles to Indian Ocean, "longest surface-to-surface rocket ever achieved."

    Not exactly, the first missile with nuclear warhead was the PGM-11 Redstone designed by Wernher von Braun. Atlas just entered service a few months before Redstone.

  • ahh... the cold war. SO many new technologies that were (thankfully) never used..

  • This was the 1st of two Atlases flown 9,000 miles in 1960 -

    well beyond the designed range of 5500 miles. Atlases do

    not explode on re-entry.

  • Great video. Brings back memories. I used to watch Atlas launches back in the late 60s at Vandenburg AFB.
