THE WW II scene is meant as the "maguffin" or the "thing" that gets the story started. In this case, a fleeing, scared woman is chased by a Nazi sniper, who surrenders all of his anger when seeing the jar. On the same token, the once scared, hapless woman now shoots him in cold blood. The jar (and it's weird contents) itself evokes all kinds of emotion from anyone that views it--remember later in the episode, the people at the art show either loved it or hated it or something in between.

I've seen both and I've gotta say that this one is better. The earlier version is just too unbelievable. The husband and the wife in the earlier version are completely mismatched. I can't quite understand however, what the World War II clip means or what its significance to the rest of the episode is.
