"Chris" is hoping a Upton Standard Bass can give him the same sound as a Kay Bass. We are hoping it can...but better. Botrh are well setup laminated basses so expect a sound typical of a ply bass. Are they the same? Different? you be the judge.
Cool comparison. I'm a bit biased because I bought a great Upton Standard Ply. I'm commenting because I was making the same decision and spoke to Gary and Eric three years ago. All the guys in East TN play Kay basses but I've found my Upton is every bit as good if not better than the dozen Kay basses I've played.
For any of you who may be listening to this on your lap top speakers (for shame!) I found the Upton to have a meatier tone with better projection. I played the sound through a pair of Mackie SRM350s, so I got an earful!
Nice Post, and fair comparison. For the record my shop sells and repairs Kay basses regularly. The UB bass sounded far superior bowed; better response, more range, and fuller sound, even though I'm not a big fan of spiros for bowing. The Kay pizzed had very strong midrange growl which cameras pick up well, however the UB had a more balance overall response. Knowing Kays inside and out and the quality of UBs instrument, I would say you are getting more for your buck with the UB, --- cheers.
Thanks for this post guys. Nice comparison. How about doing a 3 way between the Upton Standard, a Kay in good condiiton set up to your standards; and one of your Shen SB80's.
My money's on the Upton....the two sounded similar with the pizzicatto, but when played arco the UB seemed to have more grunt to it. (and I mean that in a good way). We stoppped in at your shop last month and I'm taking lessons now. Hope to be able to order one of your basses later this year.

Granted, my ear isn't very refined, but the basses sounded pretty similar. I was impressed with the warmth of both basses. Cool stuff as usual.
