  • why dont the have killer whales in vancouver aquarium now??!?

  • too controversial for them to acquire any more whales

a majority of the Vancouver people are against whales like orcas in captivity

the belugas don't seem to get protested tho

  • The site might have confused Bjossa with Skana.

Skana was the original Vancouver Aquarium Orca - later joined by Hyak.

Bjossa and Finna were donated by Iceland to VA in the mid 80's

Hyak was still alive then and fathered several of Bjossa's calves.

Hyak passed away and Finna died young soon after.

  • First of all,

    Bjossa was a girl,

Second of all, she didn't die from being 'homesick'

  • Oh, where did she die? At SWC? Because OrcaHome says she lived at SeaWorld California. Or maybe she was sent there.

  • R.I.P Bjossa you were beautiful!

  • it was seaworld and she died in transport .. she was amazing both her and finna where

  • The aquarium now has a policy in which they aren't allowed to acquire any more species of marine mammal from the wild. I'm not sure why they don't have orca's anymore, my guess is size restraints. They've heavily undergone renovations since this video, and that one big water tank is now split up into 3 or 4 smaller ones. The vancouver aquarium has shifted it's goal to conservation, rehabilitation, and sustainability, rather than entertainment.

  • BJOSSA! Oh my goodness, so many memories! She was the first Orca I'd ever seen in real life, when I was about 5 or 6. I thought she was the greatest and most beautiful thing ever. I remember seeing a news story on her being moved (was it so Seaworld or Marine Land?), and I was crying. I loved her, and I didn't want her to move farther away from me than she already was.

    R.I.P., Bjossa. I love you!

  • i think she died of a respiratory disease

  • Bjossa lived at Vancouver for nearly 20 years

She was having health problems before she went to San Diego - where she would have more orca company.

  • she looks so peaceful

  • ya he did. i heard it on the news like a day after she died.
