Buckin' for Buck - Society Six 2000

This is the first tune I am posting in honour of one of our finest drummers, Karl Watt, who tragically passed away on July 20th 2010 a victim of ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease.
The last time I had seen him was in 2005 when we met again at a jazz festival in Penticton where he had mentioned to me that something was not right with him.
In 1999 my Australian music friend Simon Stribling met a young man who was a professional rock drummer and in turn Simon told him that he was a jazz musician and was looking for a drummer. Karl said that he would love a change and maybe become a jazz drummer.
The same evening that Simon had told me about him, this fellow arrives in my basement with a full drumkit to learn everything there was to learn about traditionial jazz. Simon and I weren't really ready for all this but Simon grabbed my trumpet and I started pumping chords on my keyboard. Karl was told to just play along with us and he did. He had a superb feel for timing. We gave him some records of Baby Dodds, Zutty Singleton and other famous drummers and advised him to practise at home. He soon had it all figured out and for 3 to 4 years we were supported by a fantastic drummer.
From the first session we recorded in 2000 with our newly-formed Society Six, here is a tune called "Bucking for Buck."´

  • Nice 4 beat drummer. Steady as a locomotive. Reminds of the Ben Pollack days on the Sunset Strip. I wish I could get our drummer to do a little of that!
