Ahhh, good ole C64 - My first ever computer, had it since I was 7 years old. Still have it in the attic with about 2000 games I collected over the years. Not only did it introduce me to gaming, but to programming via C Basic and was the reason I adopted game making and, I believe, sparked off my constructiveness which stayed with me through my life - I've a lot to thank the C64 for.

Well, I fired up the old C64 Emulator to play some of the games I used to pull my hair out with as a kid and this is one of them - Dizzy was the C64's answer to Mario / Sonic / Zool or whatever platform 'mascot' each console / PC had. Sure, The Great Giana sisters was a Mario rip-off (Or vice versa) and it'll always be remembered as the C64 Mario, but Dizzy not only had platformers, but puzzlers, shoot'em'ups and adventures, some almost (but not quite) like RPG's, just like what they do with Mario and other characters today.

This is Bubble Dizzy - You get cast into the 'depths' each level and have to make your way to the surface by riding on bubbles (and, in some cases, creatures) before your oxygen runs out (Resulting in you drowning and floating to the top - A sight I saw many times as a kid while playing this game).

Anything you touch, such as nasty creatures, spikes etc deplete your Oxygen making this a very damn hard game, as there is very little to help you and no way to replenish oxygen in most levels. It has a very high frustration level without it losing it's addictiveness and, back in the day, the GFX were pretty alright, with nice (but repeatative) music.

Here's one of the levels.

  • Excellent - Did you use an emulator for this ?

If so - what did you use ?

  • Indeed - CCSC (Or CCSC64) - Quite a handy program, emulates the whole computer very well.

  • Ahh the memories of being young and having no worries in the world. Legendary times

  • Hey Ropedrink off boards?

Any chance you could post the C64 title music for this game? I have to settle a bet with myself from like 20 years ago.

  • @ErichoTTA Similar design principle I guess--just make a happy face with little hands and feet.

  • I played this 20 years ago for the last time, and I STILL remember the music.

  • the best game ........THX

  • @nonobaOMGWEEGEE2 The drum line and bass is very Billy Ocean (Get outta my dreams, and into my car).

  • Ccs64 is what i use for playing Bubble dizzy, i think the 64 version is the best and the music is awsome...

  • dizzyhead.

  • I like this music. It fits great!

  • Love this dizzy game, still play it to this day. I think this is the best version out of the amiga,st and c64. The game is more suited to 8bit and the music is freaking amazing.
