You need your birth time to determine the "rising sign" or the "ascendant", that was coming up on the eastern horizon of the sky as seen from earth when you were born. The rising sign determines what signs are going to be in the "houses" in the chart. No matter what your rising sign in the 1st house is influenced by Aries, the 2nd by Taurus, etc. Think of it as the 1st House's landlord is Aries and the favorite tenant is Mars, which rules Aries. The houses determine what part of your life the planets and the aspects to the planets will play out.
If there are no planets in a house the sign that is in that house will influence that part of your life, the ruler to that sign that is in that house will be the next thing to look at. For example: I have no planets in the 2nd house, which has Aquarius as the landlord. I have a quirky way of dealing with personal finances. Look to where Uranus is in my chart. I have Uranus in Cancer square late Venus in Virgo, I have a quirky way of dealing with family and loved ones. I also have artistic talent that was given to me and that's how I channel that quirky energy. Venus rules Taurus, Taurus is the landlord of the 2nd house. So there is a connection between the ruler of Aquarius in my 2nd house and Venus, ruler of Taurus -- landlord of the 2nd house and art has always been a big deal in my life. Art has given me the ability to go my own way in life, to be my own person and express myself.
So don't get bummed if you don't have any planets in a house. Look to the ruler of the sign in that house and go from there to learn more about yourself. Links mentioned in the video below:
