Is this the latest existentialist arthouse epic to come from a long line of sensual cinematic deli delights, or simply an exercise in sausage-wrapped psychosis? Whichever side you take, it is without doubt that "Westbrook and the Weiners"goes straight for the jugular in this sumptuous black 'n' white homage to pulp films of yesterday and "les chien chaudes"!
Shot and edited by Lenkyn Ostapovich, "Westbrook and the Weiners" finds itself caught somewhere between Guy Maddin sublimity and the surreal narratives of Alejandro Jodorowsky. Believe it or not, only ONE actor was used during production. Ding-Wen Chen was found eating ramen at the corner of Keefer and Main St. in historic Chinatown, Vancouver British Columbia. A simple agreement was soon made between Ding-Wen and Lenkyn: Do as I say and don't ask any questions. The results speak for themselves as the uncannily rich expressions of human suffering and wretched existence directed by Lenkyn are channeled through the "less is more" acting of DW. Truly a timeless performance and a life changing three minutes and five seconds. - Vanity Fair
