This GunTec video teaches the proper technique for draw filing an octagon barrel to prepare it for bluing. Hosted by Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, each step of the process, from removing dents to final polishing, is covered using a Winchester Model 1890 rifle. The process begins with the removal of dings and dents on the corners of each flat, by peening the areas with a steel punch. Once enough metal has been moved to raise the dent, a flat, smooth file is used to draw file the area. Once the draw filing is concluded, each flat is polished using consecutively finer grits of clothed backed abrasive to prepare it for bluing.

  • Interesting video thanks. I have an octagonal barrel on my Model 62 (short only) (yes stamped Mod 62 on an octagonal). It badly needs refinishing and this has helped a lot. Cheers from over the pond.

  • Be careful to tighten a soft barrel like that w o using well fitting jaws in the barrel vice! It can be distorted.

  • nice

  • He was drawfiling the wrong direction.

  • never use a file card on your files this will dull them in no time, the bristles on them are to hard. a brass grill cleaning brush is much better. chalk is not necessary

  • Does anyone know how to remove the tubular magazine, in a way that won't damage the tube?
