For people like McCain who don't know US history, there was a kind of schism in the Republican party around Taft's presidency where the Dems and Republicans flipped in views in a sense. For example, Abe Lincoln was a Republican, but he was progressive. The southern and northern democrats were conservative (wanted to keep slavery or abolish it more slowly). Hence the term "Radical Repbulicans".

McCain is obviously trying to target uneducated or disinterested people who can be quick swing votes.

Abraham Lincoln was a "Classical Liberal". Which is totally different then modern Liberalism. Classical Liberals believed strongly that the government should have little influence in the market( Just like conservatives). Modern Liberals believe in restricting the market. The Republican party has always believed in a free market.
