Brand new Opinel No. 7 knife (carbon steel/beechwood) after a simple touch-up. Note the brass lanyard ring and "vintage" handle look (palisander nitro stain + gunstock oil). The only thing missing is patina on freshly sharpened blade! Also take a look at finally modified knife: ?v=-NgeGLEaa-I
You can put a forced patina on it now. One bottle of Tarnex, $5., Box of Brillow pads, $3., Bring the Tarnex to a boil on stove, turn to med. heat. Open a window, a little smelly. Take the Virobloc off the Opinel and place the opened Opinel and Virobloc in for about 10 minutes. Take out and immediately place in cold water. Let cool and clean blade, metal ring and Virobloc with Brillo pad. Very nice patina will show. You could strip the wood from this point and treat like in video.
@retusyllib I'm sure Tarnex produces an aesthetically superior patina, but after seeing MSDS sheet for this product I'd rather stick to good ol' onions and apples for a food-safe blade staining. thx;)
@tamahagane1700 You can take a look at my forced patina on my Opinel N.07 by using the search words "Opinel patina with Tarn X" on my new channel. My video camera is crappy, but you should be able to seel the patina it gives the stainless steel Virobloc.
@GeorgiaHardwoods It's amazing how it produces etched finish on polished stainless steel... I can see some other applications for that stuff, but unfortunately it's not available where I live.
@tamahagane1700 Apples and onions will put a real nice patina on the blade no doubt. However, it won't touch the stainless steel Virobloc or neck ring. If MSDS is your worry, Brillo pad is used to remove the chalky Tarnex patina. Underneath is the true MSDS free patina you want. I'll try to make a short video of my Tarnex patina Virobloc and blade, MSDS freeof course. Besides, you'd probably have to drink Tarnex for MSDS to be any real concern, seeing that it is used to clean kitchen appliances.
