The gravitational pull of the moon and the rotation of the earth, coupled with the centripetal force of the earth, causes two high tides and two low tides throughout the day. Find out why the tides don't occur in the same cycle as the rotation of the earth with help from the chair of a department of environmental studies in this free video on the moon and tides.

Expert: Jack Hall
Bio: Dr. Jack Hall is the department chair in the department of environmental studies at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

  • The tidal force exerted by both the Moon and the Sun, resulting in tides, is exclusively based on the (differential) gravitational force exerted on the Earth by both the Moon and the Sun.

No rotation, no centrifugal force is necessary, mentioning either is misleading – and unfortunately way too many web sites got it wrong.

PS The Moon doesn't rotate around us in 24 h 50 m (it revolves around Earth in 27.3 d). The Moon advances by 50 min in its orbit every day, thus tides are 1 h later each day.

  • Watch Adam Hart-Davis' "Explain-it: How do the tides work?" on youtube for the most comprehensive and correct explanation. Also read through Donald Simanek's "Tidal Misconceptions" posted on the web. (Youtube doesn’t permit URLs to be posted in a comment.)

  • @ChocolateAndCheese1 i think he's pissed because we don't know
