Blues in Bb Russell Pee Wee Jimmy Giuffre 1957
Clarinettists Pee Wee Russell and Jimmy Giuffre both performed in different group situations in the 1957 movie "The Sound of Jazz'.
Both are great creative individualists, but I would assume they might never had met before because they always played in such different musical environments. Pee Wee played in dixieland and swing settings where Jimmy was experimenting in the so called cool jazz. I think Pee Wee must have been intrigued by Jimmy's approach because later he made several recordings with a small group of bass, drums and trombone in some cool setting as well.
So it would be nice to imagine that here the producer suggested for them to play a tune together. They probably said, "OK, but which tune. Ah, let's do just a blues. In what key. What key? Oh why not do it in an easy one. Just a Bb blues will do."
Danny Barker guitar, Milt Hinton bass and Jo Jones drums were pleased to participate in this event, so there is the "Blues"

way too cool!! Pee Wee does give a look when Jimmy lays into his ultra cool low register style. Any footage of these guys is amazing to see.
