I remember seeing this on Ray Gosling's website if it still exists. I'm almost certain it was made in 1976. What a fabulous insight into the way these places were run. Don't think anyone has ever done a similar documentary.
It was closed because the aylum system was seen to be failing and was expensive to implement. In the 70s Enoch Powell proposed what was to become known eventually as "Care In The Community" and is the mental health care system that is used to this day whereby mentally sick people are cared for in and with the support of the community, and only the worst cases are cared for as in patients.
Andyhoward. What an incredible and moving insight into the world of WH. I grew up with these 'strange folk' occasionally crossing my path. How sad that i should judge people like these in the way i did until just now. 30 years since this film wasmade. Many of the folk shown are no longer with us. They deserved so much more. Hopefully they are at peace.
Ray Gosling did an excellent job here. An incredibly moving insight into Whittingham...I would love to know what happened to these people after the closing of Whittingham as I often used to see some of the folks around Goosnargh in the 70's, in the Stag's and the Grapes, when I used to live in Preston. Why exactly was the hospital closed? Was it just money?
