The pup engine as we called them was basically a big starter, as the electric, with a two cylinder gas engine which was easier to start in cold weather. there was a clutch at the end of the pup motor which was engaged with the pull of a lever inside the cab. This was one of the best and most reliable starting systems especially for engines which was stored outside in cold weather. This system was use don Cat Graders and rubbertires dozers and loaders up till the late 70ties,

Joberg;Thank you much for loading this video for us to view.I sure appreciate it as ive never seen a 7 start since my high school days in AG class back in 1977.It was exciting for me then as i was 16 and had not gotten to work on one up to that point in my life.I now remember the pony motor(heh heh) and the effort it took to get that old machine to fire.I loved it.It gave me an appreciation sir that i not thought of since seeing your video.Again sir thank you so much for taking the time here.

Gotta love your Caterpillar!!!!!

Wow. that's really old yet cool stuff, i never knew you needed a "starter engine" for them. I love learning new things about mechanics. Does that mean you have two separate ignition keys for one vehicle?
-
that was cool to see
-
Wow, what a strong crank.

Thanks.
Very nice, Have you got any more footage of other machines here? On the left hand side of the screen I could see a Ruston Bucyrus Drag line, Crane working, I wanted to see more of that.... Do you have any video of it?
I love these vintage plant machinery shows.... 5*
