Clips on Thomas Wolsey, Archbishop of York, Cardinal and Henry's chief minister till his downfall in 1529.

Due to his humble origins and the fact that he managed to rise above this and even became more powerful than most nobles at court, Wolsey attached enemies amongst the aristocracy. It was the Boleyn faction that managed to actually achieve his downfall. Wolsey however died en route to the Tower of London at Leicester Abbey thus avoiding a bloody demise!

Much of Wolsey's life was documented by his loyal and close servant, George Cavendish. His accounts, although often questionable in authenticity are invaluable to us.

  • Aww, cool. What a legend Wolsey was. I'm studying him in history right now, I have an exam on him next month! :p

    Thanks for the video :)

  • Good luck in your exam! You aren't by any chance doing A-levels? I did mine on sixteenth century England including all the stuff on Henry's break from Rome.

  • does anyone think wolsey genuinly delayed the trial because of religious concience or because he thought anne was a phase that would pass?

  • I think it was primarily based on the fact that he resented and feared Anne Boleyn's influence over Henry. Wolsey was essentially a politician (highlighted by the fact that he didn't exactly keep a lifestyle befitting a clergyman) and so I think it is fair to see his dislike of Anne based on political concerns rather than religious ones.
