  • I don't think Singapore places high standards on grammatical structures and English word pronunciation.

  • @MrBrutus101 Sorry I believe I clicked on the wrong button. As I was saying, it is not true about what you say. Schools are very strict about English as a subject. English is the primary language of administration for the country. But it has never been the mother tongue of the ethnic people. Understandably, when people go home, there is less need to use language to communicate with the family.

  • Personally, I think Singlish is awesome. It's not "funny" or something to be "sad" about. I'd say I'd be proud to have a key accent/way of speaking within a country. xD

While on the other hand, I hate Filipino Accents and I'm Filipino. >.>

  • @kmde666 My Filipino friends speak very good English. Accent is not something we can change overnight, or even overtime, unless we have formal retraining and constant exposure to a language.

  • Thank you for your comments. Language has always been the talking point whenever people visit this country. The language used daily by the locals is not always English.

  • LIke many other versions of English mixed with foreign langauges (e,g Spanglish), Singlish has helped pp from different racial and language backgrounds (Hokkien, Cantonese, Mandarin, Tamil or Malay) living in the same country to manage communication. To them, Singlish is conversational. Furthermore, many traders had arrived in Singapore from India, China, Indonesia and most of them did not know any English. Perhaps the bosses did, but certainly not the workers.

  • I still like Singlish version - afterall, it is their culture. Why try to formalize it?

  • Sebtemple: seriously? No wonder some Singaporeans hate Ang Moh! My fiancee speaks Singlish and it's beautiful. Takes a little time and effort to learn to understand but well worth the effort!

  • what a disgusting language this is

  • I dont care what people may say about SINGLISH.

Singapore is best, many races lives in harmony.

NOTE : don't forget to use "lah" that our trademark.

    Singapore is OK lah ........

  • I applaud Singapore's Singlish. It appears everything is a shortcut version of the longer version. Now, why would one who wish to go to City Hall MRT station, takes the train from Ang Mo Kio MRT station to Wooldland, to Queenstown, etc and finally dropping off at City Hall MRT station when it's faster, used less energy and cost effective by going the opposite direction, that is from AMK MRT station to Novena, Orchard, etc and City Hall. Likewise when comes to speaking English, Singlish is No. 1!

  • @childhoodspeech English is only used for business transactions and the majority still speak Chinese. They can sure write properly, but it does not reflect the oral communication part.

Don't even tell me about your unemployment rate. Singapore is a tiny country and it is easy to control population growth to match the number of jobs available. You don't outsource to China too.

  • @lexxypexxy Don't formalize it. It's like formalizing Ghetto English.

  • @Naralee71 True. English is meant for low-context individuals who prefer concision and directness. I'm glad you understand the logic structure of an argument written or verbalized in English.
