Rodgers and Hammerstein broke new grounds in stage musical story telling with their extended music-and-dialog scenes such as this one famously known as the "bench scene" in Carousel.

If I loved you
Time and again
I would try to say
All I'd want you to know
If I loved you
Words wouldn't come
in an easy way
Round in circles I'd go

Longing to tell you
But afraid and shy
I'd let my golden chances
Pass me by

Soon you'd leave me,
Off you would go
In the mist of day,
Never never to know
How I loved you
If I loved you.

  • Beautiful! Still gives me goosebumps.

  • How fortunate we are to have YT for these memories you don't get to see anymore.

  • @Twilightfey Yes I knew what you meant. The ending of the movie effects me the same way. I was merely adding an additional observation about this song, which in reprise does of course figure also in the ending...

  • @baronwrangel1920 That's not quite what I meant. The end of the movie makes me cry. Although the song is, as you said, enchantingly beautiful. One of the most beautiful songs in Broadway history.

  • @Twilightfey Yes me too.The most beautiful song ever recorded, with two perfect actor/singers at their best. Enchanting, really.

  • @srfurley You're right. 20th Century Fox planned on filming Carousel twice - Cinemascope 55 and regular 35 mm Cinemascope. However, they found a way of converting a movie filmed in Cinemascope55 to regular 35mm Cinemascope, eliminating the need to film Carousel twice..

  • @romympanlilio

It was Oklahoma! which was filmed in Todd-AO and Cinemascope. Carousel was one of just two films shot in Cinemascope-55; the other was The King and I. It was released in 35mm Cinemascope.

  • My all time favourite show, All time favourite duet, two magic singers together & complimenting each other so well. one word ,beautiful.

  • Never EVER fails to have me blubbing at the sheer, magical, expression of true love....If only I could express it so succinctly to my wife.
