The version of this song covered here took lyrics from the "Beach Spring" version of this song and applied the chorus and its melody from "The Prodigal Son".

This version appeared in William Walker's "Southern Harmony" in 1835.

  • At the church I attend, it doesn't matter whether you have a good voice or not, what matters is the song and the passion and emotion and truth - and I like this voice better than a lot of others . Maybe a little fast- but thank you. The contemporary version loses so much impact by stripping the correct tune. Thanks for keeping true..

  • @angelfish43 Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately I tend to get caught up in the song and always speed up the tempo.

  • Great hymn sung from the heart.

  • You did a great job, and sung it the right/old way! This is one of my favorite church songs.
