I have an eee1000h, and i use it solely for experimental purposes to try out different os'es. i have successfully loaded Arch, Gentoo, Lunar and Sorcerer Linux with all features recognized and fast boot as well, using the stock kernel. Also experimented with FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. But i had to use an external ethernet adapter to get it working. My free OpenSolaris 2008.11 cd arrived from the US just now, and I am planning to test it on my eee.

What's the minimum HDthis needs for an install?
Is Gnome pokey on your computer?

I have to spend time with it. Coming from a full featured Linux distro is a bit of a shock as to how minimal it is. I still have to set up X properly and get bootscripts set up to configure things automatically for me, but that's why we have uni breaks :D

Good second choice (FreeBSD). I was raised in UNIX under OpenBSD and it's fantastic for PF (packet filtering/port forwarding), security etc. and I endured it as a laptop/desktop system for several years but something happened and I tried FreeBSD on the desktop. As a desktop OS, FreeBSD ran rings around OpenBSD. I used it for several years until Solaris was released for x86 and I've been using that (on almost all my machines here at home) since then.
You can't go wrong with FreeBSD. I loved it.

I have an Intel 3945abg. It has WPA issues in the OpenSolaris I had installed. I've replaced it with FreeBSD for the time being, just to have a crack at it for a change
Is OpenSolaris good as netbook OS? (is it better than Linux or Windows?)
