On Saturday, September 22nd, the world's best competitive eaters will converged on Portland, Maine to compete in the first-ever Costa Vida World Burrito Eating Championship. The competitive foodstuff was Costa Vida Fresh Mexican Grill's notorious Big Kahuna burrito -- an 18-ounce beast filled with rice, beans, sweet pork, and cheese, all blanketed by a fresh flour tortilla.

The contest featured 4th-ranked Tim "Eater X" Janus, a face-painting Mexican food specialist who recently shattered the world tamale-eating record, downing a staggering 71 in 12 minutes. He was challenged by female eating phenom Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas, the lovely 100-pound oyster- and wing-eating champ who has been described as a "mix between Maria Sharapova and a wild jackal loose on the Serengeti." Also vying for the $3,000 in prize money was Tim "Gravy" Brown of Chicago, and Crazy Legs Conti, who is the roommate and training partner of Tim "Eater X" Janus in New York City's East Village.

"Compact yet rotund, flavor-packed yet highly eatable, the burrito is considered by many to be the ultimate food for an eating contest," said George Shea, chair of Major League Eating. "As long as the gurgitators don't get distracted by the Big Kahuna's deliciousness"

Inspired by the rejuvenating effects of the swaying palm trees, extreme surf and delectable food of the Blue Coast of Baja, Mexico, Costa Vida provides an opportunity to escape the mundane routines of life by enjoying an addictively delicious meal in a truly unique environment. Costa Vida's first location opened in Layton, Utah in the summer of 2003 and has become a raging success, blossoming like wildflowers across the nation.

Major League Eating (MLE), the world governing body of all stomach-centric sports, conducts more than 70 events annually, including the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, N.Y. The competitive eating community, which numbers more than 8,000 veteran and rookie athletes, travels the nation in search of top titles and the glory that they provide.
