How do you know what string in used in a chord to play the "melodic" hammer on part i still am confused with that.

When playing the

*G* chord 5th string hammer on 0 to 2nd fret,

*C* chord 4th string hammer on 0 to 2nd fret

*D* chord 3rd string hammer on 0 to second fret

This was really really helpful!! I have been trying to learn a few little country tunes without sitting down and copying a full cover of a song.
