Just my two pennies but I think SEPTA should have gone with batteries instead of diesel for backup. I don't see any advantage of diesel over batteries. I have a feeling it was a political decision.

ok im confused if their suppose to be back up im guessing their only supposed to b used in emergency but yet some drivers may go the whole route in diesel mode " trust me i rode once and witnessed" Im just saying they should've put a regular cummins ISL or sumthin in it since septa said they were dual modes meaning they were suppose to run on diesel and electric in normal operation not for back up? right????? somebody answer dat for me????

The concept of an All-Service Vehicle (ASV) has been in place since the late twenties and throughout the thirties in New Jersey. The ASVs travelled extensively on routes in Northern New Jersey. Newark and environs had many lines, and photos abound with these state-of-the-art coaches. I have been on Castor Avenue numerous times, and have seen the new coaches on wire and running with diesel engines. They are 'kneeling' busses in compliance with the ADA, have A/C, very comfortable, and quick.
I thought originally they had backup batteries that were charged by running on the overhead wire, which gave them the limited off-wire capability. Interesting that they have backup diesels.
