Use of the 'moor's head' as a heraldic device dates from the 13th century with connections to the Crusades, reflecting families with victories over the moors. Heraldic devices and emblems were included to indicate ownership. Italian heraldry usually depicts the Moor wearing a white band around his head instead of a crown, indicating a slave who has been freed; whereas in German heraldry the Moor is shown wearing a crown representing dominion over the moor.

@etymologyking Re: Etymology of "Europe". You're seriously misrepresenting the entry at the online etymology dictionary which says " Europe is actually based on a Semitic word - Akkadian erebu meaning "to go down, set". Phoenician 'ereb "evening; west" . It is where the sunsets.

The Corsican Flag has a Moor's head on it too. I never understood what that meant until I started reading about moors and I looked up the meaning of the flag and it said it was a moor's head

How did you get the hardback cover edition? I have not been able to find it anywhere.

Hahaha, and we are suppose to check are brain cells out the door and believe that these black Moors wearing crowns were slaves. Also black Moors were the majority, that is why Nobles, royals, even papal have them on their family crest. I don't see any white Berber or Arabs on the ancient crest. If black Moors were only a minority of the race that made up the Moors, they would have been ignore in history not revere, having crowns and gold on them.

Pope Benedicts crest has a moors head with a crown on it. The flag of Corsica also. Schwartzkof means "black head" in German.
