When Armand Blanchonnet won the cycling road race gold medal at the Paris 1924 Olympic Games, the event was quite different from Beijing 2008 or London 2012. Athletes carried their own supplies for the race, including extra inner tubes for precaution.

The road race course went around Paris, starting inside the Stade de Colombes where it would also finish. As it went around Paris, cyclists had to face some unusual obstacles for today's standards such as crossing train tracks. Trains were working normally, so crossing the train line could mean either going straight through or having to wait while the train went by.
