It was called Lord Dunmores War. He incited the Shawnee to attack the citizens of Virginia. This battle is considered the the first battle of the American Revolution. Not to be confused with 'the first shots' at Concord. My ancestors fought at Point Pleasant against Chief Cornstalk. They went on into other battles after this of course. Thank you for posting this video.

@blueridgewv Daniel Boone was not at the battle. From Thwaite's biography:
"When Boone arrived upon the Clinch he found that Russell and most of the other militiamen of the district had departed upon the campaign. With a party of recruits, the great hunter started out to overtake the expedition, but was met by orders to return and aid in defending his own valley; for the drawing off of the militia by Dunmore had left the southwest frontiers in weak condition."

@Rossdhu16 The people of Point Pleasant and West Virginia should press their officials and push for national recognition of this historical event. I wish the History Channel or some producer would make a movie about the battle, Dunmore's War and the controversy surrounding it. The book, "A Point of Controversy" is available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble as well as Badgley Publishing's web site.It is a good start for anyone having an interest in this battle and the controversy.

@Rossdhu16 I for one, have done a lot of research and read a lot of books on this matter and personally, I believe in the conspiracy theory and that the "Shot heard round the world" at Concord, was actually an echo from the Battle of Point Pleasant which took place six months earlier in the hills of West Virginia, at the mouth of the Kanawha River. @Rossdhu16 Most people, including those of the great state of West Virginia don't even know who Olivia Poffenbarger was or what she did for the soldiers who gave their lives there. They know about the Mothman, but my goodness, there is so much more history in that neck of the woods than some supernatural folklore. (see next post)

@Rossdhu16 There is still a controversy as to whether this was the first battle of the Revolution. There was a good "round" going on at The History Channel's blog site not to long ago. The really sad part is 9 out of 10 people don't even know there was a battle fought there at all. (See next post)

@Cahiktodo My ancestors received U.S. Revolutionary recognition for their service at the battle of Point Pleasant along with the other battles they fought. I have read almost every book. This battle is indictative of a British tactic of inciting local tribes aganist the citizenry. This is not a controversy if you up on your American history facts. If you want to read controversy read about the battle of Lexington.

Do you think the Battle of Point Pleasant was the first battle of the American Revolution? Read "A Point of Controversy" available at Amazon in book or Kindle. It contains both books by Lewis and Poffenbarger as well as some very interesting and thought provoking facts and speculations.
Added a note of history about Daniel Boone and Pt. Pleasant. There is good evidence that he was present and took part in the Battle of Pt. Pleasant against the Shawnee since Lord Dunmore appointed him in command of three garrisons in this part of the frontier.
Daniel Boone surveyed some land in Point Pleasant as well and tradition states that he was in this area prior to the battle in 1774.
Daniel Boone resided in the Kanawha Valley near Charleston, West Virginia for 10 to 12 years.

God bless you for making one of my dreams come true! I have always wanted to see Point Pleasant where my people lived, and where my 4th great grandfather Rev. Capt. Isaac VanBibber died in the battle. Your video shows the area so well, with the mural, monument, etc. and your excellent commentary. I had no idea the battle was at the river's edge. I am so grateful to everyone who is using YouTube so well, and preserving our heritage.

@homespun806 You would be interested in this then, that one of Daniel Boone's sons married a VanBibber. See this link at the WV Cultural Archives about this.

rossdu, its important to note that there were blood relatives on the side of the shawnees also. sons of early settlers were captured and raised by the shawnees. many fathers and sons faced eachother in this bloody battle. the white shawnees used tomahawk, rifle and bow and arrow with the same deadly skill as the shawnee themselves.fascinating story!

@dictionar1 Yes, the Shawnee would raid and kill families and in particular take daughters captive. According to the WV archives about Daniel Boone, one of those captives taken was the famous Mary Ingles, but who later escaped.
