Susannah Yolande Fletcher (9th January 1939 - 15th January 2011) was born in Chelsea, London, the daughter of businessman Simon William Peel Vickers Fletcher and his wife, Joan Nita Mary (née Bowring). She was brought up in Scotland where she attended Marr College in Troon, Ayrshire. She took the stage name York and was an English film, stage and television actress and was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe for 'They Shoot Horses, Don't They?' and won best actress for Images at Cannes Film Festival. York died from cancer,aged 72.

  • i rather remember her in "tunes of glory", so pretty as sir alec guinness's daughter. i was in the army when this played. we all chuckled at some of the brit army situations, paralleling our own. but we all loved susannah. also, so effective as st. thomas more's daughter in "man for all seasons", a little more mature, and certainly beautiful. God bless her

  • I first saw Ms York as "Sophie " in Tony Richardson's TOM JONES, she embodied youth, beauty and charm. I have always enjoyed her work and admired her talent. I was sadden to hear of her passing. My sympathies to her family and friends

  • I first got to know Susannah York in Superman. She was a great little actress. R.I.P Susannah.
