Scottish Health Innovations Limited demonstrate how to safely use Prism Glasses when performing mirror therapy.
Mirror therapy is a form of treatment, based on imagery. It is used as a therapy for a number of medical conditions including phantom limb pain, stroke, complex regional pain syndrome and other neurological conditions.
The prism glasses were invented by a doctor, stroke rehabilitation specialist and an optometrist to make mirror therapy more portable and easy to use at home for both upper and lower limb therapy. The Prism Glasses are reversible so that effective treatment can be performed on both sides of the body.
The user looks at their functional limb, through the prism glasses. An image of the functional limb is seen as a mirror image e.g. looking at the right hand they see an image of the left hand. Mirror therapy continues to gain a professional reputation as a method for treating conditions such as phantom limb pain, complex regional pain syndrome and rehabilitation of patients who have suffered from a stroke.
Feedback from patients using the device in a clinical trial included:
"Exercises seemed more useful with Prism Glasses rather than the mirror box"
"Encouraged & excited by intervention; boosted confidence & sense of satisfaction."
"The sensations were surprising and (the patient) felt the specs were much better than the box."
