  • i always thought east coast rag and stride were the same thing. they are. mad good playin

  • In a general sense, "East coast ragtime"

developed at the same time as midwest ragtime-through the 1890's. It took probably 20-25 years for the eastern ragtime styles to evolve into stride, boogie woogie and other jazz forms that featured improvisation to a greater degree.Eubie Blake, being older than JPJ,Luckey, The Lion,Lambert etc., was more of a father figure for the style. He also had HIS contemporaries (Willie Joseph,The Beetle, Jesse Pickett) but no recordings or published works exist.

  • Stride grew out of East Coast Ragtime.

The early 1900's ragtime of Harlem and NYC reflected the energy, activity and chaos of large urban settings. Early ragtime in areas such as the midwest and New Orleans also reflected the cultural and musical influences that surrounded the composers and players.
