When a rigid closed loop is placed in soapy water and then removed, a soapy surface film is created within the boundary of the loop. The soapy film adjusts its shape to minimize surface tension, sort of like an elastic sheet. The resulting shapes are called minimal surfaces and are completely determined by the boundary. Holy science, Batman! This an exhibit at La Cite in Paris.
