Hartford Courant columnist Colin McEnroe has suggested that Frank Capra's 1941 classic "Meet John Doe" was the McCain/Palin campaign's inspiration and blueprint for their "I'm with Joe the Plumber" election strategy. The intent of this gambit is to recast McCain as the candidate of the 'Average Joe (six-pack).'

What do you think?

  • Barbara Stanwyck was a hot dish.

  • Isn't he just? How nice to remember this very good film.

  • Download the audio from this clip at soundnabber doht cohm.

  • Was there ever a director more in touch with what America really should stand for? Ironic that so many of Capra's films carried a Socialist slant to them coupled with a general distaste for the greed that's still running rampant throughout our Capitalist society (ex/Wall St vs. Main St)- this from the same guy who brought us the "Why We Fight" series that helped to rally our nation to rise up and defeat tyranny during WWII. We need more Capras (and Coopers) today.

  • @wlh1923

The real John Doe (in this movie) came to believe in what he was doing, or had become, and did something about it, or at least tried.

I don't think we disagree at all.

But Glenn Beck could never stand up to D.B. Norton. Imagine Beck with his mike cut off at the ballpark.

  • This was a great movie. First saw it 30 some years ago. My take is that this is how Glen Beck came to be. It was a publicity stunt and they were looking for some blubbering fool of an everyman and Glen Beck bacame the face. Unfortunately he turned out to be a blubbering fool and thety don't know what to do with him

  • @xocolatl3409 4:44 enter Gary Cooper. The Strong, silent type. A true American! Doesn't bitch or moan about any of the bullshit people talk about today. Just does what he has to do!

  • God bless Frank Capra. These movies show us what this country could and should be. They give us something to shoot for. We will never get there doing things the way we are now. Letting the money people run the world will destroy the world. The America of this films age is dead. Largely because of right wing scumbags and their veile evil ways. Modern conservatives are the people Capra warned us about in these films and now they run this country. I fear america is no more, due to them.

  • If more married couples conducted themselves like the government and the "news", there'd be a lot less divorces.

  • @oysterjoe : Well, that certainly came out of nowhere.
