By popular demand, Longlat and Merlin to be precise, the Huliganov Rants are back. I'm leaving too controversial topics alone this time, but the question of whether to watch a film before or after reading the book, if so be there be one, is a popular evergreen for ranting.

Thanks go also to Fat Steve of http://www.thebigcigarette.com fame for bringing to my notice the Italian version of "Is Vic There?" by Department S. Please go ahead and buy this from the Department Store so that I can be perceived as part of the music industry's value chain and then maybe they'll leave my creativity in peace.

  • audio books are great.A well known restaurant here which has many many locations has a very unique or at least accomodating library of audio books in which one can be taken from the particular location free of charge and then returned at the next restauraunt location whereever it may be.Great service for the traveler.Great way to keep customers coming back.

  • They did that in the UK for a while, not sure if they still do, at some motorway service stations.

Many thanks for the video response, which made me smile.

  • Over the years I have read and re-read "The Long Walk" by Polish Army Officer Slavomir Rawicz, about his escape from a Soviet labor camp in Siberia and his subsequent walk to India(!). Would love to see someone make that book into a film in order to compare my mental images with those of someone else.

  • I would like to see the Pillars of the Earth as a film, just to see the Medieval things, but I'd like for the thing to be carefully done so that it's accurate.

  • OK, absolutely agreed.

  • They found it funny at the beginning, but it's not as funny as it used to be. They keep urging me to trade him in and do an Austrian homosexual instead.

  • Does your family find it amusing when you channel Victor? Or are they used to the madness by now?

  • @usenetposts

    Not quite what I mean.

For instance, if you were to read Harry Potter and make a film out of it, I'm sure your version of Harry Potter would differ from what has currently been produced.

It does also come down the viewers imagination, which is going to part of the death of cinema. The audience have no imagination anymore and take everything far to literally.

  • Based on their own imaginations, so the viewers' imaginations don't need to work any more.

  • I sometimes wonder whether the whole business of trying to make movies for every good book there is isn't just another part of this "dumbing down".

Anyway Hollywood movies are the result of huge teams with massive budgets, and they are being pitched against the genius of a single, often financially struggling, author. And still the book wins out for sheer art, time and again.
