My son, Jake, was diagnosed with Autism in April 2009. He is 3 1/2 years old and has always had words but they were all labels and never put more than two words together at a time. He usually will sign when he sings it but he wanted me to sign off camera...hence when he gets to the end, grabbing my hand to sign the "A, B, C". He used to also say "L, M, N, O" but has since combined them and I think it's because at his daycare the other kids combine all these letters and he has ecolalia....we're working on it! We incorporated ABA Therapy for as long as we could afford to provide it along with a GF/CF Diet, fish oil and a daily vitamin. He still has a 'lazy mouth', but we're incorporating speech therapy for articulation. Progress and Hope :)

  • I had a little boy who used to come to the holiday care program i was at he was 4 at the time , and was alot like this , used to memorize songs , and was highly intelligent in some areas. But others used to come who couldn't speak at all, its amazing , yet sad how vast the spetrum is. But autism or not he is a clever beautiful boy :)

  • @Meshy07 - Thank you so much! I really need to upload him now doing his ABCs...let me get on that! Look for one tonight :)

  • Jake is so adorable and extremely smart, he really put a smile on my face. My 3 year old daughter was diagnosed with autism a couple of months ago and Dyspraxia a month ago. My daughter is very delayed in her language skills with only some word approximations but has about 50 signs and most of her vocal attempts is babble and whining sounds. You must be so proud of him, he sounds so awesome singing and wow what attention he gave to the song.

  • @miss5abr1na - I have been in your shoes. Jake had words, but they were said 'lazily'. My mother was a speech pathology major in college and did her senior thesis on the benefits of teaching sign language to infants (this is back in the late 70s) and so I did teach him signs early on. He was able to communicate quicker than his peers, then autism set him behind vocally. He's come very far. Yes, I am extremely proud of him :)

  • @katieejmom My cousin has Autism too but her parents won't teach her so she's not really good at the ABC's and she's 9 years old so I try to help when I'm there so I can see her progress

  • @jadeine97 - this breaks my heart to read. Why won't her parents help her? I'm glad that you've stepped up to be a positive light in her life. Good luck to you.
