A selection of news clips from BBC and ITV news on the day of a big storm that rolled across Great Britain.

This storm is also know as Burns' Day Storm as it started on the birthday of Scottish poet Robert Burns.

Actor Gordon Kaye sustained an injury from a plank of wood that hit his car windscreen and this also gets some coverage.

Unfortunately this compilation is quite a rough VHS edit and with the benefit of today's technology I would have done a much better job.

  • I was at school in a science lesson when this happened. The lesson was cancelled around midday, the teacher closed all the windows and drew the blinds and we were asked to sit in teh middle of the room until lunch time. Outside people couldn't even stand up and we were sent to the hall until our parents came to pick us up. That was one scary day....and the ride home in the car swaying from side to side!!

  • @Mindster666 I'm in the same boat haha.

  • it was not only a storm with huricane magnitude in the UK,it also effected other european countries, like the netherlands, germany etc. in Holland more then 20 people died because of this storm (which is much for a small country like the netherlands). i still remember this storm vividly,i was 26 years old and remeber the destruction it also brought in where i live( southern netherlands).

  • I was born on the night of that storm. My mum said she was sat in her hospital bed and watched a big tree fall on several cars... Very calming for a pregnant woman I suppose? O.o

  • I remember the 1990 storm, I was at primary school but remember been called inside from break time and called into the gym we wernt sent home but we didnt do anything as it was so noisy we just played games and drew pictures till home time.

  • I remember Christmas Eve 1997 when there was a massive storm lashing through Yorkshire and where I live did get battered badly. I remember going through Harrogate on Boxing Day and there was trees blown over and the wind was that powerful that it picked up one of the shelters on West Park.

  • If that happened today the Met office would put out a " Ultra mega severe weather watch".

  • @graveyboat8 Yes you're right the winds on boxing Day 1998 were savage.
