[one of three] 3/6
This film chronicles the rise of the personal computer/home computer beginning in the 1970s with the Altair 8800, Apple II and VisiCalc. It continues through the IBM PC and Apple Macintosh revolution through the 1980s and the mid 1990s at the beginning of the Dot-com boom. It includes interviews with Apple Computer's Steve Jobs and Microsoft's Bill Gates.

This three-part film first premiered on PBS in June 1996.

  • I have to say, Cringley and his crew did a phenomenal job on this documentary. Afer seeing some other computer industry documentaries and biographies on Gates and Jobs, Triumph of the Nerds is on a whole other level of quality and integrity. The interpretation of events is, at times, dramatized to an annoying degree but this is great work that really gets down to the important elements of an industry that evolved so quickly.

  • @tutorialconr No, Altair from Star Trek. Ed Roberts was a hardcore Trekkie. =P

  • @sidearmsalpha They basically cover that in this one. I don't think Gates was ever an actual employee of MITS, but one of the first things Gates, Paul Allen and Microsoft did was write a version of BASIC and some other software for the Altair, and at the time they set up HQ in Albequerque so they could be close to MITS.

  • Rest in Peace Steve Jobs - end of an era!

  • This is pretty interesting. .

  • @apogist

    haha that's amazing

  • In another documentary, they mentioned Bill Gates worked for MITS.

  • the third light from the left? D5? that would be 32

i think he means the third light from the right

  • What a shame to lost 1st personal computer in the sewers of the post.
