Marriage license denied to interracial couple

My grandmother told me this happened when she was young. It's sad that it still happens.

Beth Humphrey and Terence McKay were denied a marriage license by Keith Bardwell for being an interracial couple. Bardwell said I'm not a racist "I just don't believe in mixing the races that way" and "There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage". Sounds pretty damn racist.

U make such valid points I am black/native american/italian and I look just black and when I date outside my race people act like its a shameful thing. They forget that....duh I'm mixed raced its not that strange. People shoulkd get there head out of they're ass and stop letting the media control they're freaking lives.

@Bellaragazzo19 First, thank you and even being mixed shouldn't make a difference to someone. If they want you then it shouldn't matter if you are a certain nationality or a mix or from another planet. They should focus on you and not what country/countries your ancestors were from.

dude, preach on. i used to live a few miles up the road from tangipahoa parish. it's a shame that that hick ass place could only make it in the news for stupid shit like this. i'm half black and half white and i date white guys. i used to get looks and believe it or not people actually came up to me to tell us that we were wrong for being together. it's sickening. and props to you for doing your research!! my family celebrates loving day every year! :)

I just hope that when my sister, who is 8 right now, is my age that this kind of racism is over with. I thought it was sad that my grandmother had the same story happen to her high school friend. Then about 50+ years later we still have the same thing.

Racism is a tool used to devide, generelize and descriminate against people and should end, no one benifits from it. It is sad that there still are rasist and closeminded people in the world and some of them are even judges. Any couple of adults should be allowed to marry. At least today people are shocked to hear such news unlike people living in the 50's.

What's the big deal with the interracial marriage issue???? You need to put this issue within its rightful context. This was/is just one of the by-products of deep-rooted hatred, racism and slavery in the Americas. You are talking from a position of disconnect between an issue and its source, no wonder you're so perplexed by it. Get into the history of things and you'll get a deeper understanding and appreciation of why things are the way they are today.

Everyone. We're the human race. It's been shown that, genetically, a white man can be closer to someone in, say, Africa, than to his white neighbour (except in the south of the US where, as everybody knows, people marry their sisters and cousins all the time ^^).

Genetically there are no human "races", scientifically the word is an outdated relic.
