A great fight with a tragic ending
February 25th 2005 marked a decade. The tenth year that former middleweight champion Gerald McClellan has struggled with life since his fight with Nigel Benn left Gerald with permanent brain damage. It's been over a decade since McClellan and Benn battered each other close to death. McClellan has been under the constant care of his two sisters, Lisa and Sandra, since. The war of 1995 left him blind, partially deaf and unable to care for himself.
Today it costs approximately $70,000 per year to take care of Gerald and pay for the round-the-clock assistance that he requires. Astronomical medical bills and the costs of his yearly care have sadly exhausted all of the money that he has earned as a professional prize fighter. For this reason, Gerald and his family rely solely on donations to the Gerald McClellan Trust to care for him.

@dazza2610 Dehydration thins the membranes that protect the brain, and increase the risk of brain injury.

Contrary to comments here, a fighter has 20 seconds, not 10 seconds, if he's knocked OUT OF THE RING. This was the case with Jack Dempsey when he was knocked out of the ring in the famous Firpo fight. That fight was interesting too because D was PUSHED back into the ring by a reporter, & that was a technical disqualification (the fighter has to return on his own power). But this poses an interesting question: I suppose only if a person in his own entourage pushes him back would he be DQ'd.

We are talking a fraction of a second regarding Benn getting knocked out of the ring and climbing back in. Absolutely absurd to suggest he didnt make the count. It was an epic battle , sad for sure but an amazing battle of wills.Nobody wants to see boxers get hurt, but for me Nigel beat the fight out of the g-man, there were enough punches to the head to inflict damage on either boxer.

@thehitchrules that's why it's called a combat sport + they do it for the money and yes people do like the sport of boxing.

fight of the centry for me. true to say big ben was not a boxer but a fighter. hes stance was all wrong and had terrible feet but for sheer heart and determination was unbeatable. so many people say after the event that they saw the sings on geralds face and the ref did this wrong and the trainers did that wrong but the truth is if gerald never got a brain injury this fight would have been forgot for ever.

@torr59622 idiot! dont spout spurious bullshit unless you have evidence for it.. otherwise close ur mouth, there are mma fighters who cut that kind of weight for fights in extreme circumstances, you dont develop brain bleeds from cutting weight its the most ridiculous thing ive ever heard

clocked that on the stop watch as 10.2 secs before nigel benn re-enters the ring. The fight should have been over then if this had happened, McCellan would have avoided the situation he currently finds himself in. FACT!

Where's the nobility in this ? Really ? I am fascinated by boxing and at the same time think it is appaulling . Do boxers really come out of fights feeling good about themselves ? It's a horror show with thousands clapping and jeering for blood. Where's the dignity ?
